Orthodontics

Beautiful straight teeth and healthy oral growth

Orthodontics in Columbus, Ohio - Mark D. Raisch, DDS

Orthodontics is a type of dentistry that works to straighten and align teeth for oral health and correct chewing. Crooked teeth that are misaligned can cause problems with your facial profile, lead to gum problems, and in children, interfere with the proper growth of adult teeth.

Dr. Raisch has trained in orthodontic procedures, including traditional braces for kids and adults as well as Invisalign to provide you with long-lasting options to straighten your teeth.

The goal of orthodontics is to slowly redirect or move your teeth in a specific direction and give you a perfect, straight smile and a comfortable bite.

Orthodontic procedures can handle
many situations including:

  • straighten misaligned teeth
  • straighten crooked teeth
  • spread out crowded teeth
  • repair an overbite (upper front teeth close over the lower teeth)
  • repair an under bite (lower front teeth close over the upper teeth)
  • repair spread out teeth, such as large gaps.

Children's braces

Orthodontics for children

Between the ages of 5 and 12, Dr. Raisch checks the position and alignment of the jaws and teeth, spacing problems, breathing and oral habits, and recommends treatment for any problems he finds. Early treatment is usually very successful and can often eliminate the need for future orthodontic work or even surgical treatment.

Early treatment has many benefits:

  • Ensure proper jaw development
  • Harmonize upper and lower jaw growth and alignment
  • Ease and direct tooth eruption, ensure there is adequate space for the permanent teeth to come in.
  • Lower the risk of injury or damage to protruding front teeth
  • Correct harmful biting habits
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Simplify and/or reduce treatment time for later orthodontic therapy
  • Lessen the possibility for impacted permanent teeth
  • Improve some speech problems, and jaw joint problems, grinding, clenching and other jaw related problems.

Preteens and teens

From age 12 and on, Dr. Raisch looks at how your child's teeth and jaws fit and work together now that all the permanent teeth are in place. During this stage, the focus is on straightening the teeth with even spacing and proper alignment in the jaw. Dr. Raisch takes the jaw joint, facial profile and gums into consideration during treatment, working towards stability for your child's beautiful new smile.

What are the benefits of orthodontics?

  • Orthodontic treatment significantly improves your smile and can even change the alignment of your lower jaw for a more attractive facial profile.
  • Crooked teeth are hard to clean, and trap food particles that cause tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Poorly arranged teeth break more easily and suffer from abnormal wear. This puts extra stress on your teeth, gums and jaw which can lead to problems later on.
  • Improperly aligned teeth are harder to chew with. This can lead to poor digestion and other health problems.
