Using dental implants to stabilize your dentures

and prevent bone loss

Where appropriate and needed Dr. Raisch may suggest dental implants or mini-implants to stabilize your dentures. This has the added benefit of deterring bone loss. Loss of bone in your mouth can cause eventual difficulties with wearing dentures, jaw problems and even change the appearance of your face, giving a sunken look.

Mini-implants consist of a titanium screw inserted into the bone below your missing tooth. Unlike traditional implants, mini-implants don’t require months of healing and they work even when there is insufficient bone quality in your jaw.

If there is too much bone loss to use mini-implants, bone grafting is necessary. For most people, bone grafting is a fairly simple procedure. In cases where there is insufficient bone to graft, Dr. Raisch will assist in planning the most appropriate course of treatment for you.

Types of Dentures

You will need a complete denture if all your teeth are missing. Complete dentures are a complete set of artificial teeth attached to a gum colored base placed right on top of your own gums.

When only a few teeth are missing, a partial denture is used. By filling in the space left by your missing teeth, partial dentures prevent your remaining teeth from shifting in your mouth.

To help the healing process for extracted teeth, Dr. Raisch may place immediate dentures in your mouth right after your teeth come out. The immediate dentures fill in the space left by extraction, promote healing and prevent your teeth from shifting. When your mouth has completely healed, Dr. Raisch fits the final dentures in your mouth, making final adjustments to ensure a snug and comfortable fit.

Normally, the natural suction between your gums and the underside of complete dentures holds the dentures in place. Some people use fixatives on the underside of complete dentures to help hold them in place more securely. Partial dentures attach to existing teeth on either side of the partial to secure them in place.
